WHY THIS PROGRAM EXISTS

CONTROL WITHOUT INJURY

Jiu jitsu is built on controlling a resisting person without striking. That means taking someone to the ground, holding position, and managing the situation with the least force needed. It protects you and it protects them.

GROUND CONTROL

Most real altercations end up on the ground. We train the positions that matter on the job: getting to a dominant spot, holding a subject in place, and creating room to cuff or extract. Calm beats panic every time.

SIZE AND RETENTION

Leverage lets a smaller officer control a larger, non-compliant subject without throwing strikes. We also drill weapon retention and staying safe when someone is grabbing for your gear, the things that actually go wrong in the field.

ABOUT THE NJ
LEO JIU JITSU FOUNDATION

Asbury Park Jiu Jitsu is the proud home mat of the NJ LEO Jiu Jitsu Foundation, a movement founded and championed by one of our longest-standing members, Scott Anderle. What began as a vision to keep law enforcement officers safer and more resilient has grown into a statewide nonprofit that embodies everything we value at APJJ: discipline, community, and service.

The NJ LEO Jiu Jitsu Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a collective of law enforcement officers dedicated to improving safety, resilience, and community trust through regular training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Since 2021, the foundation has worked to build a network that is proactive, not just reactive, grounded in the belief that officers shouldn’t have to be in crisis to receive support. Sometimes they simply need something more to get through the demands of the job.

Their guiding motto says it all: Discere Pugnare — Learn to Fight. Not just on the mat, but in life.

MEET SCOTT ANDERLE — FOUNDER & CO-CHAIR

Scott Anderle has been part of the APJJ family for years and is the founder of the NJ LEO Jiu Jitsu Foundation. With over two decades of law enforcement experience, he currently serves as the Chief of Police for the Watchung Police Department. He holds a B.A. from Rutgers University and a Master of Public Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

On the mat, Scott is a 3rd-degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Professor David Branch and a former avid competitor, with IBJJF gold medals at the No-Gi Pan Ams, World Pro, and NY Open. He built the Foundation to reflect the same heart for community and service that defines our academy: helping officers stay safe, resilient, and connected.

SCHOLARSHIPS & OPEN MATS

The Foundation’s mission goes well beyond our mats. Through its scholarship program, NJ LEO partners with host gyms across New Jersey to offer 6-month scholarships that help new officers start training, removing the barrier to getting on the mat for the first time.

Since 2021, NJ LEO has hosted dozens of open mats, seminars, and classes at academies all over the state, building real connections across departments and the wider jiu jitsu community. Asbury Park Jiu Jitsu has proudly hosted several of these gatherings.
